HandCode
VR training with realistic hand interactions in complex training scenarios in industrial environments.

The Problem
Training new workers in heavy-industry settings is both costly and risky. Beyond the expense and downtime, large volumes of knowledge must be transferred quickly. In the paper-production industry, for instance, accidents and production stoppages often occur during tasks such as replacing large rollers, where workers' hands are especially vulnerable.

The Solution
We developed a virtual reality training program featuring highly realistic hand animations, enabling a significant portion of the training to shift from the factory floor to the virtual environment. This approach reduces both risk and downtime while improving efficiency.

Technical Challenges
The key technical hurdle was delivering realistic and dynamic hand-interaction within early VR headsets (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive), before native hand-tracking hardware support was available.
Outcome
Created pedagogically-effective, realistic training simulations tailored for the paper production industry.
